Retablo Mask Maker

Retablo Mask Maker

 Nicario Jimenez
13.5”x12”  Potatos and plaster of Paris. Wooden box filled with hand-made figurines.

Retablos are sophisticated folk art in the form of portable boxes filled with brightly colored figurines arranged into intricate narrative scenes.  From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Retablos were carried through the mountains by Spanish priests as portable religious shrines for Catholic saints.  Later, they were adapted by indigenous people to include their own deities and mythologies.  Nicario’s compositions depict religious, historical and everyday events.  His hands move quickly and with confidence to fashion people, animals, and mythical figurines as he creates poignant scenes from a doughy mixture of boiled potato and gypsum powder.  For his sculpting process, Jimenez’s only tool is a small piece of wood resembling an enlarged toothpick.

Mosaic Hardwood “Genie Bottle”

by jody on May.05, 2009, under Collectibles, Wood Craft

Mosaic Hardwood “Genie Bottle”

Robert Cook
‘Genie Bottle’ mosaic vessel is created from a variety of hardwoods.  9”x 5 1/2”

Robert Cook is an Arizona artist, though he grew up in the forests of Northern Michigan.  His fascination with wood began with his love of those childhood forests.  Not satisfied with the simplicity of Maple, Oak and Sycamore, he sought out exotic hardwoods.  One day while cleaning up his shop the idea of mosaicing the scraps together was born.
The block work takes upward of 30 hours to form.  Each piece is then hand-turned on a lathe.  All are unique and comprised of many different natural hardwoods, as well as “matchstick” died birch.  Run your hands along his pieces and you can feel the many different irregularities of the woods contracting and expanding, making this a living piece of art.
