 Mary Dewey
Hand-built clay figure, Raku fired

A great holiday gift idea from Inner Eye Gallery. Mary Dewey, a nationally recognized ceramic artist, was raised in southern Florida and studied art at the Cleveland Institute of Art.  She opened a studio in Ohio in the early 70’s and taught ceramics and sculpture at Muskingum College.  She eventually moved to the foothills of the Appalachians and built her house and studio in the woods, a mile from the nearest road, with no utilites or running water, where she began to work in simplicity and earnest.  One day she was adopted by a special cat who came marching through the woods on the day of the first firing of her new kiln.  It is tradition among potters that a new kiln have a kiln god and so the cat was named “Kaygee”, which is short for “kiln god”, and from thereafter she was inspired to to make cat designs.  Although Mary’s house and studio have moved and now have become civilized, complete with utilities and even a flush toilet, she still finds peace and inspiration in the woods and hills of southeastern Ohio.  This cat was named by our Gallery.
